Services and utilities

Below you will find detailed information about the services and utilities available to you at UCA Accommodation.

  • Internet access

Wired Internet is available in each bedroom and wireless Internet is provided in all areas within university accommodation. The service is provided by an external company called Glide and is included in your Residence Fees.

You can upgrade the service via Glide directly. You will be responsible for paying for any upgrade you arrange directly with Glide.

You won’t be able to arrange Internet access with any other supplier. If you have any issues regarding the Internet, please contact Glide directly on 0333 123 0115 or by emailing studentsupport@glide.co.uk.

Step 1: Connect to Glide Wi-Fi

    • Scan for available Wi-Fi networks and select Glide or connect your device using an Ethernet cable
    • Open a browser and you will be redirected to the Glide welcome screen
    • Click Get started.

    • Click Proceed to Checkout, where you can review your purchase before selecting Continue.

    • If a payment is required, enter your payment and billing details. Click Pay Now to accept terms and conditions. If the payment is successful, a confirmation screen will be displayed and you’ll be automatically logged in.

    Step 4: Go online

    • You’ll receive an email confirming your order.
  • Electrical supply

Generally, the electricity supply is controlled by a circuit breaker and can support up to 3kw of use per bedroom at a time.

All electrical appliances must be fitted with a UK standard 3-pin plug or be used in conjunction with an appropriate adapter. The electricity (power) supply in the United Kingdom is 230 volts at 50 hertz.

In most EU countries this will be the same. However, in some countries, for example USA, most electrical appliances are 110 volts. Please ensure that all electrical equipment you wish to use in the residences is compatible with the UK voltage (230 volts).

Information relating to the voltage should be on the specification (metal) plate attached to the appliance. If you are not sure or if there is no metal plate containing this information, please check with a competent person (electrician) before using the appliance. The use of portable heaters and cooking equipment such as rice cookers, toasters and kettles is strictly prohibited in bedrooms as this will over-load the system and may cause a failure in the electricity supply and/or an electrical fire.

Farnham Student Village only: Each bedroom in the Student Village is fitted with a 5amp fuse and can support up to 1kw of use per bedroom at any one time. Use of items over 1kw (such as hairdryers and vacuum cleaners) in the electric sockets will blow the fuse. There is an electrical socket located under the wardrobe space which is on a different circuit and will support the use of the larger items listed above.

  • Water

All water in the accommodation is safe to drink and in accordance with current regulations, regular testing is carried out on the water supply. Please note - at Epsom the water in the bathrooms in Worple Road is not suitable for drinking.

Hot water is maintained between 50 and 60 degrees centigrade. This means that the water will get very hot. Please take care not to burn yourself. Generally, the hot tap is marked either ‘HOT’ or with a red disc; the cold tap is marked either ‘COLD’ or with a blue disc.

They are open 24 hours a day 365 days a year. You can download the free Circuit app if you have an IOS or Android phone.

  • Mail

Your letters will be delivered to your flat or house by Royal Mail. If mail is delivered to your accommodation that doesn’t belong to anyone living in your accommodation, please bring it to us and we will arrange for it to be returned to sender. It is an offence to open mail not addressed to you.

Canterbury: Your mail will normally be delivered to your accommodation by the Facilities Assistants. All mail requiring a signature (Registered or Recorded) will be delivered to Reception. Campus Life will notify you by email that you have a parcel to be collected, you will need to produce your UCA student ID card. Reception is open for you to pick up parcels and mail Monday – Friday, 9am – 5pm (closed weekends). No large bulky parcels will be stored – you are required to get these delivered to a designated pick-up point or make arrangements to meet the delivery courier at a pre-agreed location. Large bulky parcels will be turned away by Reception and you will have to make alternative arrangements to have them re-delivered.

Epsom: Each flat has its own mailbox either situated outside the entrance of accommodation or in the lobby. The mailboxes will only accommodate letters. Do not get parcels sent to your accommodation as the lobby areas in the accommodation are not secure. You should arrange for larger items and parcels to be delivered to a secure locker or collection point, for example the Amazon Hub Counter in the Co-op opposite Epsom station, or the InPost lockers outside Sainsbury’s on Kiln Lane (KT17 1EQ). If you receive a package that is too large to put through the letter box of your accommodation block it will normally be returned to the local sorting office and a note left for you to make arrangements for it to be redelivered or collected. If your mail requires a signature, the postman or delivery company will leave a note through your letterbox advising from where you can collect your item.

Farnham: Letters will be put through your front door or in your designated post box by Royal Mail. Parcels and mail requiring a signature will be delivered to the Post Room which is located at the vehicular entrance to UCA in a portacabin. The Post Room will be open for you to pick up parcels and mail between 12 – 2pm and 3 – 6pm Monday – Friday and 2.30 – 4.30pm on Saturday. No large bulky parcels will be stored. You are required to get large parcels delivered to a designated pick-up point or make arrangements to meet the delivery courier at a pre-agreed location. Large bulky parcels will be turned away by the Post Room and you will have to make alternative arrangements to have them re-delivered.

When your contract ends, you will no longer have access to your letterbox to collect your mail. It is vital you organise for all post to be re-directed to your new address until you have had time to update your information. To redirect physical mail in the UK, apply online via the Royal Mail or Post Office websites. You can set up mail forwarding to any UK or overseas address for 3, 6, or 12 months starting from £45.00. You will need at least 5 working days for the setup.

  • Cleaning

You are responsible for cleaning your own bedroom and en-suite where provided. The cleaners will clean the communal areas - hallways, kitchens, communal bathrooms and toilets in your accommodation once a week. Your kitchen bins will also be emptied on the day of your weekly clean. You are responsible for emptying the bins the rest of the week. They will normally do this between 9am and 1.30pm on your scheduled cleaning day (please see the information on the notice board in the communal area of your accommodation). An additional clean of all en-suite rooms will be conducted at Christmas and Easter. You will be notified of the exact date prior to the job being completed.

Please make sure that all communal areas are tidy so that the clean can be completed. In particular, please ensure that the following is carried out before the cleaner’s weekly visit:

    • All surfaces (worktops, tabletops, ledges, tops of cupboards etc) must be clear of pots, pans, crockery, cutlery, food debris etc
    • All floors must be clear of personal belongings, rubbish etc
    • For health and safety reasons, don’t put anything on the cooker hoods/extractor fans.

When cleaning you should use your usual household products, like detergents and bleach, as these will be very effective at getting rid of germs on surfaces. Clean frequently touched surfaces such as door handles, handrails, remote controls and tabletops.

Your accommodation won’t be cleaned if it hasn’t been prepared properly. If the cleaners can’t clean your accommodation, they will report this to us. We will write to you outlining what action must be taken to resolve this – persistent problems may result in disciplinary action being taken which may include a financial penalty.

  • Waste and recycling

Recycling facilities are provided in all student residences. Please use the bins provided. Waste sent to landfills emits methane; a greenhouse gas that’s 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Please take a second to check if what you are throwing away can be recycled and recycle as much as you can.

Epsom only: There are three bins in each flat – two for recycling and one for general waste. These should be emptied regularly and disposed of in the communal bins outside the accommodation (Wilberforce Court’s bins are located outside the entrance of Wilberforce Court North, Crossways House and Bradford House’s bins are in the bin store by the entrance of Bradford House and Worple Road’s bins are outside the entrance to each building).

You are responsible for emptying the kitchen bins. Please take full bags from the kitchens to the waste bins located outside your accommodation.

Please don’t leave rubbish bags outside. If the bins are full, please contact the Caretakers or Accommodation Office. Separate bin banks are provided for glass (bottles and jars) at most residences. Please only put glass in these bins – no plastic bags or boxes.

We have introduced food waste bins. Don’t put any oil, fat or foodstuffs down the sink. Used oil should be put into a suitable container and disposed of in the food waste bins provided.

    Sanitary waste

Toilet paper and tampons can be flushed down the toilet. Please do not flush anything else down the toilet including make-up/facial wipes as these are the most common cause of blocked toilets and drains. Please try and keep plugholes clear of hair.

  • TV licence

Televisions aren’t provided, but if you bring a television with you (or rent one) for your room or communal areas, you must, by law have a licence for each set. If you use your computer for watching live or on demand television, you must have a separate television licence.

Find out more and apply online.

  • Parking facilities

If you are a resident in university accommodation you will only be able to park on campus if you are Registered Disabled.

If you are granted a permit to park due to your disability, you must display a valid permit and you must park in a designated parking place.

If you bring a bicycle to campus, you are responsible for its security. Bikes cannot be stored INSIDE University accommodation at any time. However, the University provides some storage for bicycles on campus.
